Geriatric Rehabilitation

Geriatric rehabilitation differs from younger persons in that many older adults suffer from multiple conditions that can interact to produce disability. An understanding of this process is necessary. Our very own, Dr. Mary Drost, PT, DPT, CEEAA, has accomplished this with in her studies at UTMB and will be happy to assist you in the recovery process at Victoria Physical Therapy.

Fall Prevention

The National Council on Aging reports (2013) every 29 minutes an older-adult dies from a fall and every 14 seconds an older adult is treated in an emergency care center for a fall-related injury. Physical therapists are trained in fall prevention such as:

  • home safety assessment
  • education on what may put you at increased risk for falling
  • specific exercises and activities to target weak areas and reduce fall risk
  • balance assessment and treatment
  • environmental modifications
  • assessment of medical conditions and medications and how these may factor into increased fall risk such as vision, hearing, osteoporosis, being over the age of 80, changes in walking pattern and balance, vertigo and dizziness

Physical therapists are trained to help identify fall risks and educate and treat older adults in reducing fall risk and preventing injury.
